I can smell your filthy soul.
See what I did there. Yes “The Evil Dead” from 1981 in my opinion (and its my blog so FU) was not that great a film, hell even Sam Raimi thought so as Evil Dead 2 was essentially a far better remake in itself. So how does this THIRD remake fare?
I am very surprised to say I thoroughly enjoyed it. Well most of it. The last act went rather off the rails but up to that point the movie performed excellently. The always asked question of “why are they there anyway” is answered smoothly with the excuse of an intervention. Mias behaviour is also explained well using this reasoning. The only flaw that people always seem to pick up on is the reading of a demonic text found in a spooky cellar.
Well actually that's also bollocks, anyone that claims they wouldn’t investigate a cool looking book found in a spooky basement is a liar. As demons are not real what is there to fear? People in the film actually act rationally for once until it really is too late to do otherwise after all THEY don’t know they are in a horror movie. I mean if your withdrawing junkie friend, desperate to return to civilisation, tells you the trees are raping her… well what conclusion would YOU jump to?
If I have any complaints it is the rather poor characterisation of the five friends, this is very minor however as they really are just meat bags for the churner.
My other major gripe of over lighting is also well addressed with the lighting pitched just right for the film allowing us to see what we need to but maintaining the effect of the dark. At last a Director has remembered what shadows are.
Evil Dead is a very good remake of a rather poor film. Tonally it is closest to the original than its two sequels which is no bad thing. After all Army Of Darkness was pretty much a comedy. Its nice to see an alternative take on the darker path the source could have taken.
I now need to go an sit down as this is the first remake I have actually liked for a very very long time. Don’t expect it to happen again….
If you have enjoyed this please stumble or like or whatever. My traffic needs some loving
