District 9 (2009)

I mean, you can't say they don't look like that, that's what they look like, right? They look like prawns.

Holes. Big stinking plotholes. That's my initial comment on District 9. That and KEEP THE BLOODY CAMERA STILL. Given my known hatred for plotholes, shakycam and CGI I must hate District 9, surely I must hate District 9?vlcsnap-2012-06-16-21h13m09s86

Actually I thought it was pretty damned good. The use of a very “non-hero” looking protagonist was inspired, the integration of the aliens into existing society artfuly done and the CGI… well I will never, ever excuse CGI again. This looks real and sets a benchmark that all movies should be aspiring for. If CGI can be done this well then practical effects can be retired. Sadly I have never before seen CGI done this well.vlcsnap-2012-06-16-20h57m26s129

Yes there is the question of how the “prawns” strength can vary so wildly and where all the weapons actually came from. With the overarching vision I can forgive these holes. The movie also makes a far too clear connection with apartheid, perhaps this was intended but surely a rage against apartheid is now a moot point.

District 9 isn't brilliant. It is, however, very good sci-fi and a great movie. Its nice to see the genre alive and kicking. Well worth a watch.

Paul Out… now where's the Kit-e-Kat?vlcsnap-2012-06-16-22h05m02s245
