Willard is the heart warming tale of a dispossessed boy bitter against the man that took his fathers business and belittles him in a mundane job. His only real friends become his growing army of rats, his white rat Socrates and the pushy and somehow sinister Ben.
Willard is a fantastic little film with some great animal work. Its storyline is somewhat weak however and it has aged to a degree. The real star of the film is the rat Ben who really does seem to have a character of his own and scares Willard from the off with his apparent jealousy of Socrates. It also feature an excellent performance by Ernest Borgnine as the aforementioned boss.
When Socrates is murdered Willard snaps and uses his rat friends to gain revenge. His reaction after this is somewhat odd, seemingly wanting to get rid of the rats. Ben has other ideas.
Willard is well worth a watch to pass those small dull hours. Never to be a great film it does manage to be good and what more can you expect than that?
PS The sequel Ben will be coming up soon, the theme of which IS the well known song sung by Michael Jackson.
