The Shadow of the Cat

Rather then post the trailer today, rather differently I have the whole film!

The Shadow of the Cat is one of those gems that has yet to receive a proper DVD release, languishing in the vaults of cheap TV channels its a bit of an oddity.vlcsnap-2011-06-26-19h39m56s122

Filmed in Monochrome at the start of Hammers Technicolor period it relies heavily on atmosphere and is entirely earthbound in its plot which revolves around the fairly simple (but very original) premise of a cat that seeks revenge for its owners death.

Feeling almost like a horror film version of an Ealing comedy it is oddly effective and great fun. The copy I watched was in awful condition but managed to keep me interested the contrivances and deus ex machinas that later films would have encompassed are minimal. The Cat manages to take out its enemies in a wholly believable way. vlcsnap-2011-06-26-20h21m55s227

Overall Shadow of the Cat was a nice little diversion from the usual gore, paring down Hammer productions to its core and showing just why the studio had such success.
