After wading through what seems like a million episodes of The Keys of Marinus, The Aztecs is a welcome shot in the arm. Its set design is at the level of a school play and it seems to have been shot in a small cupboard. However the script, costume design and acting are truly superb. Hartnells romance seems touchingly real and, for a change, The Doctor is IN this story! The fight scenes are unfortunately poor and I am afraid I cannot buy Ian as a rival to a civilisations greatest warrior. Gripes aside honestly think that the Aztecs is the best that Series One has had to offer yet.
Now to rub it in…. The (bloody) Sensorites.
COME ON THOSE STONES ARE PAINTED ON BLOODY PLYWOOD!
