The Mummy (1959)

Hammer continued their plundering of the Universal classics following Dracula and Frankenstein with “The Mummy”. As with pretty much all of the early Hammers it is solidly built around the amazing Cushing and Lee double act. However Lee is sadly wasted as the mummy, despite his incredible physical presence the man is so much more then just a “big fella”. Despite this he still manages to bring pathos and style to a character that is entirely swathed in bandages and has a script that says “grunt”.

The Mummy is rock solid in style and substance and a jolly god watch. This surprised me as I have always considered this to be the absolute weakest "Classic Creature” but Hammer manage to produce a sterling effort and it does not disappoint.

Extra note to Who fans, its nice to see Logician Klieg as the fez toting Egyptian. From Mummies to Cybermen!

Of note, however, is the bane of 60s and 70s cinema… black face. The Egyptian makeup is obvious on several occasions and almost insulting in its implementation. A shame as I'm sure the act could have been pulled off without any need to black up at all.

Great stuff.
