Vertigo (1958)

Vertigo Trailer

This is one of my “what do you mean you have never seen (insert film name)” and I was rather looking forward to it given that it is touted as a damn fine movie in almost every circle.

It is.vlcsnap-2010-07-11-20h00m29s150

One thing that struck me part way into Vertigo is the comparison to the Hollywood of today. There is very little action, special effects or titillation however Vertigo remains throughout a compelling film. I watched it with the brilliant perspective of being unaware of the twist. With this in mind I was blind to the subterfuge and shared Jimmy Stewarts utter bewilderment at what was happening.

Once the halfway mark is reached and Madeline plunges to her death the film becomes truly spectacular in is machinations and our previously amiable Stewart starts to become a far more sinister player. Like “The Sixth Sense” once the cat is out of the bag absolutely everything suddenly takes on a new angle and it all makes sense. All this is achieved with pure storytelling and in the 52 years since Vertigos release something that has all but disappeared. Name any film made past 1980 that manages such an effect with an essential cast of 2 and very little in the way of special effects?

Vertigo is a truly great masterpiece of cinema and well worthy of its inclusion in the hall of cinematic fame.vlcsnap-2010-07-11-20h37m48s16
