Nuns on the Run (1990)

19 years later its quite easy to forget how good Nuns on the Run actually is, as an example of British comedy it shines and while not quite a laugh a minute it certainly does have some brilliant lines and situations in what is essentially a very simple film.vlcsnap-2009-08-24-12h11m50s55

The basic story is that our two old-style gangsters are no longer happy with their chosen proffesion. Its all guns and danger, rather then the gentleman's profession it was “back in the day”. They engineer a double cross putting themselves top of the hitlist for The Police, their old boss and the Triads (who have a great collection of sharp implements)vlcsnap-2009-08-24-12h16m29s29

Nuns isn't fancy but that is one of its strengths, verbally it is brilliant with hundreds of quotable lines like “Why you follow us? You follow us again, we cut your arms off”. Music is well done by Yello and the film moves along nicely (although it does rather sag in the middle. Of course the true linchpins of the film are Coltrane and Idle but special mention also goes to Camille Coduri who found later fame as Rose’s Mother in Doctor Who.  vlcsnap-2009-08-24-13h36m35s227
