Monkey Shines (1988)

Alan Mann is a quadriplegic man, trapped and frustrated in his unresponsive body. His friend arranges for a helper monkey to act as his hands. However this helper Monkey is part of a darker experiment and becomes mentally attached to Alan and homicidally jealous to anyone who comes close to splitting them up. This all comes out in a film that is essentially a mixture of Misery and Play Misty for Me.vlcsnap-2009-07-16-15h39m13s187

Monkey shines was not really what I expected form a George A. Romero film (better known for zombies) but that is not to say it isn’t good. The film is taught and tense, the monkey is frightening in its intensity and Alans helplessness in the face of a lunatic is well portrayed. One thing that I don’t quite understand is why he didn’t tell the worst nurse ever to just fuck right off!

There are a few strange plots and the adaption from a book shows through with this as parts of the film feel really condensed making me think it may be worth looking for the source material for this one.

Monkey Shines is not bad at all, if you have never watched it, take a look.
