Ginger Snaps Back: The Beginning

I must admit I am rather fond of the Ginger Snaps films. The first was a surprise in its low budget but interesting take on the lycan legends. The second surprised me as I really couldn’t see where it could go, but it did and rather ell at that. The third is always tricky in this case especially so as on the face of it, it appears to be a historical retread of the first movie.

Of the trilogy it is certainly the weakest but with such strong stable mates that still is no bad thing. The period setting is pulled of well. I’m sure historically the dialogue is far too modern but this still works in the context of the film and avoids the mistake of making language so out of kilter that it becomes unreal.

The characters of Ginger and Bridgette return but this time are set in the past, effects are good and the limited budget rarely shows. One gripe is yet again the obvious use of night lenses. It is always obvious when footage is shot during the day and altered to appear night, so obvious that as an effect this really does not work.

As a final salvo from the Ginger Snaps armoury the film does a good job, any more will certainly be overkill this series is complete.
